The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n That line has followed me for years, and recently I found myself wondering: after five decades as an interpreter, what does it mean for me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Is interpreting a calling? An addiction? A craft? A gift? A skill? Maybe it\u2019s all of these. Or maybe it\u2019s something that runs so deeply in us that we can\u2019t imagine being anything else. When we step into the booth, we\u2019re not just transmitting words\u2014we\u2019re lending our humanity to another voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And yet, here we are in the age of Artificial Intelligence. AI can draft a speech, give expert advice, and even imitate the style of Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Hitler, or Fidel Castro. But does it feel what they felt? Does it tremble with passion, ache with doubt, or rejoice with conviction?<\/p>\n\n\n\n I don\u2019t think so. At least, not yet. Perhaps one day, apps will simulate laughter, anger, or even something that looks like love. But will they really fall in love? Will they cry with grief, or smile with that subtle warmth only a human being knows? Would it know what an orgasm is? What does menstruation and childbearing feel like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s why Jung\u2019s words speak so strongly to me. My privilege has been to remain human\u2014fully human. To interpret not just words, but sighs, hesitations, and laughter. To cry, to fear, to get angry, to fall in love, and sometimes out of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n AI may grow more powerful every day, but our humanity remains our truest privilege.
