{"id":611,"date":"2025-08-05T18:36:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T18:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalinterpreters.info\/?p=611"},"modified":"2026-01-21T18:41:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T18:41:03","slug":"simultaneous-interpreters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalinterpreters.info\/fr\/2025\/08\/simultaneous-interpreters\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Simultaneous Interpreters Born or Made?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1215\">At nearly every conference I attend, there\u2019s always that moment\u2014during a coffee break, in the hallway, or after a session\u2014when someone walks up to me, eyes wide with curiosity, and asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1216\"><strong><em>\u201cHow do you do it?\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1216\">You listen, process, and speak at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1217\">They ask it with awe, disbelief, and sometimes a little fear. Because yes, from the outside, simultaneous interpretation looks like magic. One person speaks, another listens\u2014and&nbsp;<strong>at the same time<\/strong>, that second person speaks in another language, with no script, no pause, and no time to think, without hesitation (well, sometimes not really, lol).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1218\">I smile. And I usually say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1219\"><em>\u201cWith a lot of practice\u2026 and a little bit of madness.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1220\">Then comes the bigger question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1221\"><strong><em>\u201cAre interpreters born or made?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1222\">After decades in booths across the globe, my answer remains the same:&nbsp;<strong>They are made. But they must be born with a few key wires already in place to be an interpreter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"viewer-ember1223\"><strong>Beyond the Language<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1224\">Yes, speaking two or more languages is essential\u2014but it\u2019s just the entry ticket. The real work begins after that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1225\">A simultaneous interpreter needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nerves of steel<\/strong>: Because speakers can go 200 words per minute, use heavy accents, or dive into technical jargon without warning. And you can&rsquo;t blink.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A cool head and a hot brain<\/strong>: You must react in real time, translating not only words but also tone, context, intent\u2014on the fly, without losing your rhythm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trained voice and ears<\/strong>: Your voice is both your tool and your shield. It must be clear, calm, and resistant. And your ears must decode accents, filter out noise, and handle poor audio systems with grace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thick skin<\/strong>: Someone will always say you missed a word, chose the wrong term, or didn\u2019t match the tone. Sometimes they\u2019re right. Sometimes not. You must learn, adapt, and move on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Zero ego<\/strong>: This is not a stage\u2014it\u2019s a booth. We shine by helping others shine. The best compliment we can receive? That no one noticed we were even there. We speak someone else&rsquo;s words.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"viewer-ember1227\"><strong>So\u2026 born or made?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1228\">Yes, you\u2019re born with sharp ears, a love for language, and the ability to speak and listen at once without short-circuiting. But interpreters are&nbsp;<strong>made<\/strong>&nbsp;through years of disciplined training, constant preparation, quiet observation, and the humility to keep learning\u2014even after decades in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1229\"><strong>So how do we do it?<\/strong>&nbsp;With discipline. With passion. With a calm voice and a racing mind.
