{"id":636,"date":"2026-01-21T18:56:48","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T18:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalinterpreters.info\/?p=636"},"modified":"2026-01-21T18:57:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T18:57:13","slug":"interpreter-voice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalinterpreters.info\/es\/2026\/01\/interpreter-voice\/","title":{"rendered":"Does the Interpreter Have Their Own Voice \u2014 or Do We Merely Borrow Someone Else\u2019s?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"viewer-ember1098\">After more than 50 years interpreting for global leaders, Olympic athletes, scientists, and policymakers, I\u2019m still asked a question that cuts to the core of our profession:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-321b5631\"><strong>Are interpreters just invisible messengers \u2014 or are we co-protagonists in the communication process?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ygaz1633\">Let me share a few thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-wm20m635\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"viewer-5hc5q637\"><strong>Not Machines, Not Parrots<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-3v95c640\">Interpreters are expected to disappear behind the speaker\u2019s words. We don\u2019t embellish, edit, or express personal opinions. Our job is to be <strong>transparent conduits of meaning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-1h4ls644\">But make no mistake: that doesn\u2019t make us machines.We capture nuance, tone, emotion, and irony across <strong>languages and cultures<\/strong>\u00a0in real-time, under immense pressure. One wrong word can derail a negotiation, offend a delegate, or distort a message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-284yw650\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"viewer-buvq1652\"><strong>Working in the Shadows<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-mj8ce655\">Yes, much of our work happens behind the scenes. The best interpretation flows so naturally that the audience forgets we\u2019re even there. Like stage lighting in a theater \u2014 when done right, it supports everything, yet draws no attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-vsz68659\">But invisibility does <strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;mean irrelevance.Without us, the message doesn\u2019t reach the room. Without us, understanding stops where language begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-8sey3663\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"viewer-r6e5q665\"><strong>The Speaker, in Another Tongue<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-8ikxb668\">When we interpret well, the audience laughs, feels moved, and takes action \u2014 in another language.That\u2019s not a coincidence. That\u2019s presence, discipline, and skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-wj244670\">For a few minutes, we become the speaker in another tongue.Their ideas, emotions, and intent pass through <strong>our voice, our choice of words, and our ethical compass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-tqei6674\">We don\u2019t steal the spotlight.
